What the published literature reports
- Improvements in HbA1c and other markers of glycemic control have been reported following Sleeve Plus MagDI at short- and mid-term follow-up.
- Some patients with Type 2 Diabetes have been reported to achieve reduced medication requirements or, in some cases, diabetes remission as defined by their study's criteria.
- Outcomes depend on baseline disease severity, duration of diabetes, beta-cell reserve, and adherence to recommended follow-up.
Important caveats
- Diabetes remission is not the same as a cure. Recurrence is possible, particularly with weight regain or with progression of underlying disease.
- Long-term durability of diabetes improvement beyond current follow-up windows remains an open research question.
- Outcomes vary among individuals; published averages should not be interpreted as guarantees.
- Decisions about diabetes management should always be made in coordination with the treating endocrinologist or diabetes care team.
Context
Metabolic and bariatric surgery is recognized in current ASMBS/IFSO and ADA guidance as an option for selected patients with obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. MagDI and Sleeve Plus MagDI represent newer additions to this field; long-term comparative data with established procedures continue to develop.
